On New Year's Day in the 7th year of Yoro (723), an old man in the capital who lived in the village of “Tiger's Tooth (Konoha)” prayed to the Kasuga Grand Myojin in Nara and made a ritual vessel to be dedicated to the shrine using the red clay from Konoha Mountain. When the remaining clay was thrown away, it is said to have turned into a monkey. Originally, the clay was colorless, but now some of them are colored. They have long been cherished by the local people as a guardian deity to ward off illness and misfortune, to bring harmony between husband and wife, and to ensure the prosperity of their offspring.
